LIBRARY BOOK PROJECT

September 29, 2012

To:        Silliman University Alumni and Friends

Since the announcement early this year that SUAF would embark into the next phase of book donation for the Philippine Heritage & Culture Collection at the Mira Mesa Library, there was great excitement among members to organize immediately. As it turned out, it wasn't easy. Nobody wanted to lead the book committee for the long haul in spite of the assurances of help coming from the active members. With 3 chairmen resigning one after the other, there was fear to abandon the project altogether.

Today, however, a new committee with renewed enthusiasm and optimism has been formed, and we are seeing a lot of progress in our library project:

Chairman Fely Narvaez
Members: Ben and Luisa Sy
Gay and Joel Simpkins
Pastor and Mila Paniamogan
Sonia Sheeks
Reinhold Paniamogan
Laarni Gularek (Ex-Officio)

With the help of outside donors and influential people in the San Diego community, The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office in the Philippines, the Department of Tourism, a CEO, a doctor, an ambassador, business owners, we have collected over 130 books, brochures, posters, dvs, cds with more to come for our book presentation event on October 27, 2012, at 1 pm, at the Mira Mesa Library. We are also honored to have Congressman Bob Filner, a friend of Levin Sy, (son of our members, Ben and Luisa Sy) as our guest speaker. There will be performances by a Filipino singer and a violinist included in the event. Refreshments for everyone in attendance will be served. Since it's the Philippine American History Month, everyone must wear a Filipino attire to the event.

While things may appear encouraging, the book committee cannot be left alone to do it all. They need the support from every one of us since this is a project of the organization. Some members of the committee have already stretched themselves out to do what they can when others can't. Remember, these are the same members who are also involved in other things for the organization. Here's what you can do:

  • Distribute the attached flyer to schools, Filipino organizations, friends, relatives
  • Advertise in Filipino newspapers
  • Continue soliciting donations for books, cds, dvds, etc.
  • Purchase books (you will be reimbursed)
  • Spread the word
  • Volunteer to help the book committee - decorating, food and reception

Thank you. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Laarni Catague Gularek
President

At the January 21, 2012 meeting, SUAF voted to approve a project that will provide a supply of books and multimedia to the Filipiniana Section of the Mira Mesa Library. This was a community project that was originally launched during the administration of then president Susan Soldwisch, and carried on by the next two administrations of then president Nate Tan and then president Fely Narvaez.

The Filipiniana Section is currently in its "dire" state due to the scarcity of Filipino books and materials, wear and tear condition of books, and books lost, stolen or unreturned. This has prompted SUAF to act in order to remedy the situation. This has likewise served as a reminder to what we have committed to do for our community - to continue serving the needs of the library patrons by giving them access to our history and culture right at their fingertips.

So we are asking all our members especially those who are visiting the Philippines for Founder’s Day to help by checking out bookstores for Filipino books and Filipino media. Please refer to the attached lists as your guide to what books to purchase or donate. We are also soliciting donations. Donated books have to be about the Philippines or books written by Filipino or Filipino-American authors. Donors will be acknowledged by having their names affixed to their donations.

The books will be presented to the Mira Mesa Library on October 27, 2012 to coincide the celebration of the Filipino American History Month in October. The book committee will meet on September 22nd to prepare for the presentation. The event will include food, entertainment, a guest speaker and press presence.
